About the name qathet
qathet (pronounced KAW-thet) is a word from the Tla’amin Nation language.
It speaks to people working together, and it is the name of the regional district that includes Powell River, Lund, Texada Island, Savary Island, Lasqueti Island and the communities between.
A name that was gifted
Tla’amin Elders gifted the name to the regional district in June 2017.
The regional board then asked the community for input, which wrapped up in October 2017, and asked the province to approve the change from Powell River Regional District to qathet Regional District.
The province approved it on July 5, 2018.
Why this site uses it
This guide takes its name and its spirit from qathet: neighbours, local businesses and visitors finding one another.
We write it with a lowercase q, as the regional district does, and we are glad to be corrected on how to say or spell it.
For the district’s own account of the name, visit the qathet Regional District website.
